Collagen And Our Skin

Collagen And Our Skin

Have you heard about collagen?

We know collagen has become a more popular subject in recent years, so in this blog is everything you need to know about collagen.

You will learn what it is, why it is needed and how to help protect, promote, and preserve the collagen your skin.

What Is Collagen?

Collagen isn't just a buzzword it is the most abundant and fundamental protein in our bodies. It is what gives our skin its strength and elasticity.

These collagen protein fibers and connective tissues gives our skin structure and plumbness. You can think of it as the scaffolding that holds everything together.

Why Do We Need Collagen?

Collagen is the key to maintaining youthful-looking skin. It provdes the framework that keeps our skin taut, wrinkle-free, and resilient.

Collagen also aids in wound healing and tissue repair, as it forms a "scaffold" for the growth of new tissue.

Essentially, collagen is the foundation for glowing, healthy-looking skin.

The different types of collagen

There are over 28 types of collagen in the human body – but the majority of collagen in the skin (80-85%) is Type I collagen, which is responsible for skin's overall structure.

Skin also contains Type III collagen (10-15%) for support and flexibility.

Skin Ageing

By the time we’re in our twenties unfortunately, our skin is already losing collagen. Collagen naturally degrades as we age, declining at a rate of 1% per year after the age of 30. Collagen is considered crucial for skin health because:
  • photo-aging (long-term exposure to sunlight)
  • intrinsic aging (an inevitable physiological process that results in thin, dry skin, fine wrinkles, and gradual break down of the dermal layer of the skin)
  • extrinsic aging (external environment factors such as air pollution, smoking, poor nutrition, illness and medication)

All these above factors trigger the decreasing of collagen from our bodies. As we age, the production and quality of collagen in our skin decreases, leading to visible signs of ageing.

Ageing reduces the production of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycan (such as hyaluronic acid) in the skin, as well as cartilage.

As a result, our skin tissue weakens, losing its integrity, and the skin becomes dry and unable to retain enough moisture.

Thats enough of the bad news, here is some good news.....

The Benefits Of Increasing Collagen In Your Skin

The good news is, that we have plenty of options to help us protect, promote, and preserve the collagen in our skin and in turn reduce signs of skin ageing and improve the health of our skin.

My Personal Kollo Journey

I started taking Kollo's delicious and easy-to-drink Premium Liquid Marine Collagen well over a year ago now. My husband was the first of us to come across Kollo and the benefits of taking liquid collagen as he is an avid runner and also has a history in the fitness industry.

My husband was a personal trainer 10 years ago and even back then he was aware of the benefits of collagen for his clients for their recovery and reducing joint pain, better bone and cartilage function. Many of his clients waiting for knee and hip replacements or healing from these operations found taking collagen daily was very benefical.

Now jump to today, my husband started to talk to me about collagen as I suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome and now turning 43 years old, I am now peri-menopausal so the aches and pains are sometimes too much to bare.

So I did my research on all brands of liquid collagen and Kollo come out on top.

So over a year ago I started taking Kollo daily and almost straight away I started to feel the benefit. My joints and recovery from a hard gardening session seemed to start to get easier and then I started to notice that my skin was really starting to look more plump and hydrated.

I really feel taking Kollo everyday along with my key Dermalogica products and my in salon treatments, I am managing to keep many signs of ageing at bay and keeping my skin looking and feeling healthy.

Kollo really helps to support my skin rountine. Plus the benefits of reduced joint aches and pains I would recommend Kollo to everyone. So much so, that I have now become an Ambassador.

Do Collagen Serums Work?

Aged 43 I am really trying to keep my skin as healthy as I can to stand me in good stead for the future. As a skincare therapist I know that healthy functioning skin is a key investment.

There are many ingredients that are "must haves" for me to use in my regular Dermalogica skin rountine - vitamin C, Retinol, Hyaluronic acid and many more.

Now, the million dollar question is do Collagen serums really work?

The market is flooded with collagen serums – but it’s crucial to note that as a rule, collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin’s surface.

So while collagen serums can help with hydration, they can’t actually boost skin’s collagen levels but that being said I am really excited to announce that Dermalogica has been working behind the scenes to find a way to produce an amazing product that supports and banks your natural collagen in your skin called Pro-Collagen Banking Serum
